Paper C Methodology

The 3-day methodology course aims to give the candidates an insight into how to scrutinize an opposition paper of the European Qualifying Examination. By the end of the course the candidates will have learnt how to analyse a client’s letter and efficiently extract and administrate information in the patent in suit and in the prior art. Candidates will be able to identify the important attacks and execute those attacks in a structured manner with the aim of scoring a sufficient number of marks in the available time. Time management is an integral part of the course. Where relevant, we will use WISEflow, giving candidates the opportunity to get familiar with the stystem used during the e-EQE.

You can choose to attend this three-day course either online or on-site, depending on your preference.

Online

The online course is provisionally scheduled to take place from 9:00 to 17:00 (CET) on the following dates:

The on-site course is provisionally scheduled to take place from 9:00 to 17:00 (local time) at the following locations:

Please note that on-site courses may be converted to online format if the minimum number of registrations is not met.

The following topics are covered

An overview of how Paper C has developed through the years, expected attacks and level of argumentation
Legal background: priority, added subject-matter, claim interpretation, state of the art, novelty and inventive step
Analyzing the client’s letter
Analyzing the patent to be opposed (claim interpretation, claimed objects, effects and definitions of features)
Determining the effective dates of the claims, making a time line, solving and arguing any priority issue (same invention, 1st application issue, various tests)
Establishing the state-of-the-art, dealing with European prior rights
Recognising and dealing with added subject-matter attacks on the description and the claims; detailed explanation of the various test
Identifying and performing novelty attacks based on European prior rights under Art.54(3)
Identifying for each claimed embodiment the relevant sections of the Art.54(2) prior art documents and performing the ‘must-have’ attack(s) under novelty or inventive step
Time efficient analysis of the documents and recording of information

Bundle Discount

If you register for the 3-day Paper C Methodology course as well as the 2-day Paper C Guided Exam course, you will receive a discount of € 200 (on the course fee of the Guided Exam). This offer only applies to courses taken in the same EQE year.

If you register for all four Methodology courses for Papers A, B, C, and D – or for the three Methodology courses for Papers A, B, and C together with the Paper D Distance Learning course – you will receive a €125 discount on the course fee of the last course for which you register. This offer is valid only for courses taken within the same EQE year.

Registration fee and VAT

You may register multiple participants for the same course within a single registration. However, each course requires a separate registration.

If you book multiple courses individually on the same day, only one administrative fee of € 125 will apply. A consolidated invoice, including any applicable discounts, will be issued.
All fees listed above are exclusive of 21% VAT. If a valid VAT number is provided, VAT will be exempted.

When to register?

Both our onsite and online courses have limited participant slots. To ensure your place, we highly recommend registering as early as possible.

The online version of this course includes the shipment of physical materials, please register at least two weeks in advance, provided that seats are still available. Late registrations may result in delayed delivery of course materials. Note that digital copies of the course materials will not be provided if there are delays in the physical shipment due to late registration.
