Main Exam Paper AB – EIPEF

In this course candidates will learn how to sit Paper A and Paper B. For Paper A, candidates will have learnt how to analyse the clients letter and prior art and how to define novel, inventive and clear claims which provide the client with maximum protection in the context of paper A. Candidates will be able to identify important hints in the papers leading to the intended solution, and will be able to draft claims and an introductory description in a structured manner for paper A.
For Paper B, candidates will have learnt how to analyse the prior art, client’s letter, the application as filed and the communication to define novel, inventive and clear claims which provide the client with maximum protection. Candidates will be able to amend the claims, and to answer the communication. This hybrid course features onsite introductory sessions in Utrecht, The Netherlands, followed by online homework paper discussion sessions and four mock exams in WISEflow, ensuring a flexible and comprehensive learning experience.

- Main legal background:
  - claim categories and claim interpretation

- Practicing the legal background with short cases
- Finding the invention: eliminating options, finding commonalities and essential features, determining effects
- Drafting the independent claim(s): finding the formulation for the claims
- Drafting dependent claims
- Drafting the introductory part of the description
- Practice mock exams (past real EQE Paper b exam papers)
- Correction and feedback on your four submitted past EQE Paper A exam practice papers
Paper B:
- Main legal background for paper B: problem-solution approach, added subject-matter tests
- Dealing with the client’s letter and proposed claims
- Finding the desired claims
- Drafting the response to the EPO for paper B, focusing on arguing the basis for the amended claims and inventive step
- Practicing mock exams (past real EQE Paper b exam papers) and cases
- Correction and feedback on your four submitted past EQE Paper B exam practice papers

Course Schedule

This hybrid course includes three full-day on-site sessions at the Aristo Meeting Center in Utrecht Lunetten, Netherlands, followed by six half-day online sessions. Below is a provisional course schedule.
