EQE Paper M1 courses

Paper M1

This paper assesses whether the candidate can carry out tasks relating to analysis and assessment of information and evaluate and act on instructions from a client. It also assesses whether the candidate can understand an invention (for example as described in a patent publication or disclosures) and/or data provided by the client, assess the invention in view of prior art, and analyse the compliance of the invention and the application or patent with the provisions of the EPC.

For a thorough understanding of the introduction to the New EQE, including its relationship with the current/old EQE format, please consult “Navigating the EQE format changes” overview prepared by epi. Main Exam Paper M1 – EIPEF

The M1-paper of the new EQE is an entirely new paper without a clear equivalent in the classic EQE. Therefore, an entirely new course has been designed in order to prepare candidates for this paper.

The course builds on the knowledge and skills that candidates have developed with respect to EPC-substantive topics in their preparations for Part 2 of the Foundation Module.  Knowledge of the main substantive topics will be refreshed and deepened, and candidates will be prepared for the new type of exam questions that requires a holistic insight into the European patent system. In addition, the basics of claim drafting from scratch, amending and defending claims and analysis and argumentation with respect to validity of claims will be discussed and practiced.

While still providing a theoretical framework where necessary, the course is focused on building practical skills with respect to analysis, argumentation and drafting. Cases and mock exams play a key role in the course programme.

This course is aimed at candidates who passed the Foundation Module of the EQE in 2025 and plan to take the M1-paper in 2026. We strongly advise candidates to prepare for papers M1 and M2 in the same year.
